Monica Huggett

Monica Huggett was a teenager when she was introduced to the baroque violin during her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She felt an immediate empathy with the early instrument and went on to earn an international reputation as one of the preeminent baroque violinists of our time. Ms. Huggett has an active international career as soloist, director, and chamber musician. She has performed and recorded with many distinguished ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Hanover Band, Raglan Baroque Players, European Union Baroque Orchestra, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, which she formed with Ton Koopman in 1980 and led until 1987. Ms. Huggett's extensive discography encompasses recordings on the EMI, Harmonia Mundi, Philips, Virgin, Decca, Teldec, Koch, and many other record labels. In 1998, Ms. Huggett toured the USA with James Galway in a program of Mozart orchestral works. With Trio Sonnerie, she has championed the works of the French baroque masters, and she has recorded chamber works by Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven with the chamber ensemble Hausmusik. Since the 1995-96 season she has also served as Artistic Director of the Portland Baroque Orchestra in Oregon. In addition to maintaining her busy performing and recording schedule, she is also Professor of Baroque Violin at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Germany. Monica Huggett performs on a violin made in Cremona, Italy, in 1618 by Hieronymus and Antonius Amati.
